Welcome to Dr. Hunt's reading class SharePoint home page at Sabin Middle School.
A little bit about myself: I am a 30 year veteran teacher, teaching reading and writing for the past six years. For the first 2/3 of my career, I taught music, band, choir, and art to students Kindergarten through twelfth grade. I love teaching 8th graders because this is the time students learn who they are and start settling their personalities. Eighth grade is a grade of great change, physically, emotionally, and socially for students. I love being able to help guide my students through these changes, helping them be proud of who they are. I earned my doctorate in February 2013, so I could help students at a higher and deeper level.
This year 8th grade Reading students will focus on
- non-fiction literature (in the classroom and on Achieve 3000)
- fiction (novels read on their own at home)
- Poetry (analyzing in the classroom)
We will be using close reading techniques that will teach the students how to understand and delve into what they are reading, no matter the subject area. They will also learn to read as a historian and a scientist. All non-fiction reading and poetry will be done during the school day. All fiction reading will be done at home.
Fiction Assignments: Students will have daily reading at home. This reading is to be completed on FICTION only. They are welcome to read non-fiction, but the book reports are completed on fiction novels only. The student may choose any fiction book that is within their Lexile reading range to read. This novel is to be read at home within a 4 week period, and the student must complete a tailored book report on the novel. At the end of the 4 weeks, another novel is to be started.
